  Rostov State Medical Institute, RostSMU, RostGMU, Rostov State Government MedicalUniversity.In 1915, the Division of Medicine at theRussian Warsaw University was moved to Rostov on Don and that gave rise to thepresent day Rostov State Medical University. It was initially formed as adepartment and later transformed into a medical Institute in 1930. There wereabout 295 graduating doctors in the first graduating class of the newly formedschool.Due to the diversity in the students thatattended the University, an award of the Order of Friendship was awarded to theUniversity in 1980. With students from all parts of the world represented.In 1994, the Rostov Medical Institute whichis the largest basic training, research and treatment center in southern Russiawas renamed the Rostov Medical University.

In college annually trainsover 5000 students and 7000 students - the faculty training and professionalretraining of specialists, each year more than 650 people trained in theinternship, residency, the graduate school. The university operates thecoordinating council for additional post-graduate professional education of theSouthern Federal District. In college widely used modern educationaltechnology, including computerIn 2008, RostSMU Medical established amilitary training center for students training contract to contract service inthe Armed Forces of Russia in the officers' positions after graduation.The University operates 91 department, whichemploys over 800 people teaching staff, of whom more than 130 doctors,professors, about 500 candidates. The university engaged in research andclinical activities, and 3 1 academician, corresponding member of RussianAcademy of Medical Sciences. 52 professors are members of other Russian andinternational academies, 9 employees are Honored Scientist of Russia, 26 -Honorary Doctor of RF and 10 - Honored Worker of Higher School of the RussianFederation.The best traditions of their predecessorscontinue to develop now working academics and professors. In the growth LGUformed unique scientific schools: IY Serebriiskii, AA Kashaev POB Lelchuk, ANGordienko, VA Nikolsky, PA Sokolova, PP Kovalenko, NV Danilova, MJ EVTODIEVA,AA Kolosov, PM Shorluyana, EK Alimov, MP Nevsky, AA Botchkareva, BI Vorobiev, AEEssel, AG Ponomareva and others, who are currently adequately develop theirpupils.The University has its own clinic, which has1000 beds, and apart from this has its bases in the largest city hospitalsalso, which enables the students to acquire sound practical knowledge andskills. University buildings and clinics are provided with up-to-dateequipment, and other modern appliances. There are 63 departments, 27 of themare clinical based in the best clinics of the city, more than 150 research andeducational institutions function in RostSMU.Rostov State Medical University proves to beone of the oldest Higher Medical educational establishments in Russia. Thehistory of its foundation is significantly different from the history of othermedical institutions in Russia. In 1915 the Russian Warsaw University wasevacuated from Warsaw to Rostov-on-Don where the University had become theDonskoy University. The best representatives from the medical institutions ofWarsaw, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Kazan had gathered in its medical facultyand founded its own unique Rostov medical school that had become one of thebest in Russia. Later on the University’s medical faculty and Rostov MedicalWomen Institute were united and became the largest centre of medical scienceand training of medical personal in the South of Russia.The University celebrates its 75 anniversaryin 2005. Today the University possesses modern educational buildings, clinicsand departments, institutes and faculties supplied with modern diagnostical andmedical equipment for training high-qualified specialists.The main directions of thescientific-investigation activity of the University are:1.  Studying of the pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria and effectivityof the treatment HIV-infections;2.  The pathogenesis, diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of theheart-vascular diseases3.  Development and introduction of the methods of the X-raydiagnostics and radiation therapy;4.  Studying of the pathogenesis mechanisms and development thetreatment methods of the ulcerative disease;5.  Treatment methods in acute surgical diseases of the thorax,abdominal and pelvic cavities, methods of endoscopic surgery;6.  Development and improvement of the methods of the prophylaxis,diagnostic and treatment of the urological diseases;7.  Development and introduction of the methods of the diagnosticsand early revelation of the tuberculosis;8.  Ethiopathogenesis, diagnostics and treatment of the blood systemdiseases;9.  Reconstructive surgical procedures for the treatment ofposttraumatic patients;10.Diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation of the patients withthe mental illnesses, development of the measures for the urgent psychiatricand medico-psychological help in social stress and extreme situations.Medical University Clinic 

The clinic has 860 beds at the hospital,including 20 specialized departments, 18 medical-diagnostic units, 17 clinicaldepartments, whose employees carry significant medical, counseling and teachingwork. In the consultative and diagnostic polyclinics growth RostSMU dailycarried about 200 advisory receptions for 37 occupations in which employs 130professionals, including 17 doctors of medical science, 61 PhD, 21 heads ofdepartment. For registration and accounting of all consultative and diagnosticwork, as well as hospitalization using modern computer technology.
