Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) is the first international university in Uzbekistan and first in Central Asia to offer Western education, with United Kingdom (UK) qualifications. WIUT was established in 2002 in partnership with the "UMID" Presidential Foundation, the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, and the University of Westminster in London (UoW).

History

Our 100-year-old building is located in the beautiful city center of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The building survived the largest earthquake in the history of Uzbekistan, which occurred on the 26th of April, 1966. Construction on the building began in 1911, during the Romantic period in the Russian Empire. During this time, the building was used as the 2nd Women’s Gymnasium. Later, during the Soviet period, the building was donated to the Aviation College. A century later, the college was merged with the newly formed Tashkent Aviation Institute. In January 2002, after renovation and reconstruction, Westminster International University in Tashkent opened its doors to the first 120 students on the Level 3 Certificate of International Foundation Studies (CIFS) course and the BA (Hons) Business Administration degree. Our goal in establishing WIUT was to enable citizens of Uzbekistan and other countries to obtain an internationally recognized bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Business Information Systems, and Economics and Commercial Law, all validated by the University of Westminster. From 2005, WIUT has offered the internationally accredited Master of Arts in International Business and Management degree, as well as a professional qualification for teachers – the Postgraduate Certificate in Special Studies in Teaching and Learning. Since the university’s establishment, the student population has grown to over 5,000.

Achievements

2004: WIUT held its first international conference: “Higher Education Management: International Trends and Local Sustainability”.
2005: The first 16 students graduated.
2006: The first postgraduate degrees were validated by the University of Westminster – International Business and Management and Special Study in Teaching and Learning.
2008-2009: The Academic Lyceum of WIUT opened its doors to 150 students.
His Royal Highness, Prince Michael of Kent, paid an official visit to Uzbekistan and attended the opening ceremony of the first sports hall.
2009: The University launched its “Pre-University” course, where University applicants are more effectively trained to matriculate at WIUT.
2011: UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) gave outstanding commendations to the University of Westminster and WIUT.
2012: WIUT celebrated its 10th anniversary, and the total number of WIUT graduates reached 1,000.
2013: WIUT opened a new Regional Learning Center in the city of Urgench (Khorezm).
2013: The postgraduate degree LLM in the International Commercial Law was validated by the University of Westminster and the WIUT campus was further expanded with the opening of a new learning building and sports center.
2015: Inauguration of the WIUT Alumni Association
2017: The postgraduate degree Master of Arts in Applied Economics was introduced.
2018: WIUT held the first International Conference in Internationalization and Innovations in Higher Education which is associated with the new internationally peer-reviewed journal, Silk Road: A Journal of Eurasian Development.
2019: Opening of SAP Next-Gen Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab. The University has been part of the SAP University Alliance since 2015.
2019: Founding of the Bloomberg Financial Research and Training Lab, which provides access to current and historical stock prices, and world currency exchange rates. currency exchange rates and information on world exchanges.
2019: Launch of the Center for Policy Research and Outreach (CPRO).
